Kenan Scholars and Carolina LatinX Center Explore Advocacy & Authenticity with Claudia Romo Edelman

Claudia Romo Edelman, a Mexican-Swiss diplomat, inspirational speaker, and DEI activist, joined the Kenan Scholars and Carolina LatinX Center on Friday, Nov. 11 in a talking circle to discuss social entrepreneurship and diversity in new business development. Mrs. Edelman is a prominent figure in the realm of social advocacy. She has launched many successful initiatives, such as SDG Lions, Product (RED), and the Sustainable Development Goals. She also co-hosts “Global GoalsCast”, a podcast that shares the stories of business leaders, companies, and organizations that are advancing sustainability as a priority in business. Additionally, Edelman has international experience with various global organizations, including the United Nations and the World Economic Forum. With the UN, she led communication and advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Change branch.

Speaking from her extensive experience across various industries, Edelman encouraged scholars to continue inspiring change in the world. The conversation focused extensively on the disparities Latinx business professionals face in the professional sphere and Edelman’s experience in mitigating them. Her brand, the Product (RED), which styled the red iPhone series, seeks to amplify Latinx voices and promote unity within the Latinx community by giving them a common, unifying symbol. The line also seeks to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funding towards eliminating HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan African nations.

Edelman discussed how her work seeks to increase private sector collaboration towards public wellbeing initiatives by nudging private companies to increase diversity. Claudia also stressed to attendees the importance of being relentlessly authentic to who you are, despite social expectations or stereotypes. As a woman and a Latina, she realized how difficult it was to find a place where she was fully accepted and appreciated by her company. Now, she seeks to inspire companies to become places where individuals, regardless of race, gender, or other identity affiliations, feel welcomed and supported as their authentic selves.

Following the formal circle, students in Kenan Scholars and the Carolina LatinX Center got the chance to connect with one another and also further engage with Edelman over refreshments. We are grateful to Claudia Romo Edelmen for her time and insights and to the Carolina LatinX Center for their partnership, as this event allowed Kenan Scholars another opportunity to see the impact business can make on society.
