Rollie Tillman Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award

Named in honor of UNC Kenan-Flagler Professor Emeritus of Marketing Rollie Tillman Jr., the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise’s first director, the Rollie Tillman Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes one student’s superior contributions to community betterment efforts. The recipient displays superior leadership in and out of the classroom and leaves a lasting impact on the Kenan Institute through his or her work and service.

Through a generous gift from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Fund, the award is conferred on one graduating undergraduate student during the spring of each year at the Kenan Scholars graduation and awards ceremony.

Kenan Institute Leadership Award

The recipient of the Kenan Institute Leadership Award is an exceptional graduating MBA student who has demonstrated superior research accomplishment and exemplary leadership that advance the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise’s initiatives and impact at Kenan-Flagler Business School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and beyond.

The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise develops and promotes innovative, market-based solutions to vital economic issues, and fosters the entrepreneurial spirit to stimulate economic prosperity and improve the lives of people in North Carolina, across the country and around the world.

The Kenan Institute Leadership Award is conferred during the spring of each year at the Kenan Scholars graduation and awards ceremony.

Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Scholar Medal

The Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Scholar Medal is awarded to a distinguished undergraduate Kenan Scholar who has endeavored to serve the Kenan Scholars program, the Kenan Institute, Kenan-Flagler Business School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and communities beyond with distinction.

Named for the Kenan Institute’s founder and benefactor, Frank Hawkins Kenan, the award commemorates the late Mr. Kenan’s legacy, vision and belief in private enterprise and the entrepreneurial spirit as stimuli for economic prosperity and for improving the lives of people in North Carolina, across the country and around the world. The award is conferred during the spring of each year at the Kenan Scholars graduation and awards ceremony.

James H. Johnson Jr. Policy Impact Award

The James “Jim” Johnson Policy Impact Award is presented to an outstanding undergraduate Kenan Scholar whose work and commitment are poised to shape changes in policies, programs and practices aimed at alleviating disparities and improving people’s lives.

Named for the director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise and William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, the award recognizes a Kenan Scholar whose work and service engage with local, state, national and/or international communities and who has made outstanding contributions to changing the world for the better.

The award is conferred during the spring of each year at the Kenan Scholars graduation and awards ceremony.

John D. Kasarda Research Excellence Award

Dr. John Kasarda is the longest-serving director of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. Under his leadership, the Kenan Institute was named the world’s top air logistics educational institution by the International Air Cargo Association. Dr. Kasarda currently serves as the president and CEO of Aerotropolis Business Concepts LLC, president of the Aerotropolis Institute China and the editor-in-chief of Logistics, an international scholarly journal. He has conducted extensive work in the field of aviation infrastructure, business competitiveness and sociology and was awarded the title of Kenan Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship. He was also earned a fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for his research on airport-driven economic development. Because of his many accomplishments as a scholar, leading the way in cutting-edge research at the intersection of business and aviation, this award named after Dr. Kasarda celebrates a Kenan Scholar who has achieved excellence in research.
